Portraits at high ISO

After my trip to Viernam/Cambodia people kept on asking for more portraits mostly from Myanmar. And last Monday I have given a presentation for the Fotografencafé at Woerden (The Netherlands) about culture/travel photography. A lot of the visitors were very interested in my images shot with high ISO. Now I have made a combination: mostly portraits shot with high ISO, either 3200 or 6400. And most of you know I am a Nikon photographer and all these images come out of my Nikon D3s with mostly the Nikon 24-70 zoom. I will try to put some of these images with a higher resolution at Facebook at www.facebook.com/ernykahlephotography in a couple of days.

River of Hoi An, Vietnam (near Danang)

Near the city of Danang you will find a small but lovely (but also more touristic) village Hoi An. Strolling through the centre along the river is the thing to do. If you want to see the fishermen take a small boat around sunset.

This post is about the way the nature integrated with the temples in the past thousand years. Most trees have grown into the temple of Ta Prohm. It is an amazing and astonishing view.

Almost at the end of my trip through the surroundings of Angkor Wat. One of the oldest Buddhist monuments in the world has inspired a lot of photographers. Around Dong Van and Meo Vac (North Vietnam) there is still a very small minority the Lolo which is very hard to find. Moreover the younger ones mostly don’t wear their traditional dress. The dress is expensive and the children love the market clothes more than the traditional ones. I was lucky to pass by a village where I was invited for a drink and food because of New Years day. So I can show you a lady in her traditional dress preparing her hair dress.

On our way from Ha Giang to Dong Van we passed by a region of the Geen H’Mong minority. You will find them in several parts of the North. But this part is known for their special head dresses. For this reason with this post I focused on portraits.

After Vietnamese New Year the government people has 9 days off (it can be different per region). This is mostly followed by all the people and so in most areas (not the cities) it is quiet. But during these holidays the youth is coming out. You seen them evrywhere in their traditional dresses and the marketplaces are mostly used as their playground.

Women and Bac Ha Wine (Jan 22nd)

On the last day of the (Chinese) year on the market in Bac Ha you see a lot of selling of the so-called Bac Ha wine. This is corn wine, 60 % and made by the people themselves. The selling is done by women, mostly bought by women but the drinkers are mostly men. It’s drunk in very small glasses but the times they fill it up is tremendous.
Before they buy the wine the women taste it at several places and finally come back to the best smell. They bring their own plastic bottles and it is filled for $ 2,- (40.000 dzong) per liter.

Can Cau Market (near Bac Ha) (Jan. 21st)

The night train from 09:00 PM brought me in 9 hours from Hanoi to Lao Cai. From there in 2 hours to the North East to Bac Ha. This region is well known for its weekend markets mostly visited by the local Flower Hmong minority group. With this post you will find some portraits people asked for to be published. They were shot today at the Can Cau market 28 kilometers (one hour drive) from Bac Ha.

Hanoi (first impressions) (Jan. 19th)

Yesterday evening late (January 18th) I arrived in Hanoi. A very busy place specific in the Old City (Hoan Kiem) and that’s where I am staying. Because a lot of people is waiting for my first impressions herewith some images. One image is especially published for my family (in Vietnam isn’t it remarkable). Tomorrow I will go by night train up North and I don’t know how and if internet is working over there. Temperature is 20 degrees and overcast. But it’s good to be back in East Asia. I enjoy my black ice coffee.

Make up Thanakha for Kids

In January 2011 I wrote a post about the white make up in Myanmar. Because people asked me to come with some more images I have chosen now for het kids. Herewith also the explanation I wrote in the before mentioned post.

I got many questions about the white paint on the faces of the Myanmar people. It is not paint but it is their make-up. And it is not only for their beauty but also for health. Especially the Myanmar women adore thanakha as their traditional beautifier as well for medical reasons and it is has been here for generations. Thanakha is obtained by grinding the thanakha tree bark (35 years old) on a flat, smooth stone with a few drops of water. It can be applied straight away on the face but also on the body. It is used by either women or men (they are a bit shy to use it) but also (as you can see) by children.

Thadingyut Lightning Festival

Thadingyut Festival celebrates the end of the Buddhist Lent and the return of Buddha to earth at full moon day of Thadingyut (October). It is one of he most important days for Buddhist.The most beautiful and crowded celebration is at the Swedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Next year the pagoda will be according to history 2600 years old.
Thadingyut Festival forms the focus of religious as well as community activities. It is the time of remembering those to whom we owe respect and gratitude. Furthermore we have to ask for forgiveness of might-have-been-done wrongdoing to parents and grandparents.
This candle light festival is there to illuminate the way for Buddha for his descent from heaven. In Burmese it is called the 9.000 candles festival (See Mie Koe Htaung Pwel) and it happens in the mid of October. The images you see here are shot on October 23 last year (2010). And you see them here in my blog because this year (2011) the festival is on 11-13 October. I feel sorry I could not be there.

Living along the riverside (Myanmar)

During all my trips in Myanmar I had to travel quite often over water. This because I could not reach the villages I wanted to visit over land. Many people live along the river because this is their only supply of water. But it is also their only way to transport goods for a reasonable price. The morning light gives you always the most fantastic views. Traveling over water brings you to places most people have not seen and in those places are the hill tribes in their natural habitat.

This post shows you images of one of the Art & Craft Schools in Thimphu, Bhutan. I focussed at the concentration of the pupils. They are very dedicated to the practice of the several arts. They are very willing and proud to show their experience in the several art forms.

Studying novices (nuns and monks)

At school in the monasteries the novices follow their normal secondary education and the buddhist tuition. Where this is done depends on the possibilities (availability of buildings and teachers). After the novice period (when they are around 20 years old) they have the possibility to go to college but then they have to go to the larger cities far away from the local, rural places where they have spent their youth.

No running (tap) water

In large areas of Myanmar there is no running (tap) water. Early in the morning before sunrise the women of the villages go to the nearest safe well, pond or river where the water is usable for daily use. They do this in cans but they cannot handle more than 2 and this means they have to do this several times a day. And this a larger part of their daily work because the walking distance is often more than 30 minutes.

Feb 24 Chin (tattooed) ladies around Mindat

Again a 3 hours trekking route to the Chin villages over very hilly paths. I even did not take most of my Nikon equipment with me but I almost did not survive. But of course in the end I did. This was was one of my main objectives: visiting Chin villages with ladies with the so-called half moon tattoo. And on one of the images you can see a young lady around her twenties with the tattoo. This is remarkable because the government has forbidden this habit. But you can be aware in very isolated villages it is difficult to go after these rules.

The Chin State which is only recently partly opened for foreigners can only be explored mostly with 4 wheel driven cars. We used the Myanmar variant of the old Willy Jeeps of the forties of last century. Crossing through large sand areas, rivers and paths not worth the term roads.

Feb 15 Padaung (long necks) women around Loikow

Loikow is a small village on the South of Inle Lake. Until recently foreigners were not allowed because the situation was very often quite tense. But we were lucky to have the permission to enter the area. This is so interesting because it is the only area were you can find the Padaung tribe in their natural environment. Most women moved to Thailand or other places to be shown to the public. It is a very poor region so this is one of the only ways to earn some money. Many places are almost women-less but we visited some very small villages with these Paduang women at home. We hope these images will be seen as a tribute to an almost past culture and not a fairy attraction.

At a real local market in the middle of Inle lake you can find a lot of people of the Pao Hill Tribe. They come in the morning and in the afternoon they cross the lake on their way of hours walking back home. They are really colorful.

Inle Lake is one of the finest spots for pictures at water. Especially because of the fishermen rowing with one leg. The people of the villages at Inle Lake live on the water and even for the smallest kids it is their way of living. The sunset and sunrise are magnificent ( see also some previous posts).

Feb 11 Visit to the Loi Hill Tribe

We wanted to go to a village at about 4 hours drive and 2 hours walking over one hill top. After 1 hour we stopped at some houses and the people asked us where we wanted to go to. After having said so, one of the men said there is another loi village above the houses at about one hour walking. And besides that, as far as he could remember there has never been a foreigner. This is a challenging remark for a photographer like me so we went walking uphill. After more then an hour I asked how far to go . The answer was very soon over the hilltop. To make it short: I walked for 4 hours over 2 hilltops and knowing my physical health you can imagine I was broken. And I had to go down too. I was lucky my guide could arrange a small motorbike for the way down. But I realized this could be even worse. Going down a narrow, slippery path with on side the slope and on the other side nothing but the depth. Finally I made it.
The Loi hill tribe is known for living in socalled “long houses”. They live together with 6 to 10 families and about 60 persons not including animals. On the images you can see how dark it is and they have several fires in these wooden houses. Finally the last image is an impression of my struggle.

After a car trip of two hours and another 2 hours walking over one hill top I finally reached the place Hoyin. It consist of 4 small villages where you will find animists, Buddhists and Christians. They live in peace and wear all this wonderful Gaung Saung. They start wearing it at the age of fourteen.

As I have told you before the communication and internet possibilities in Myanmar are quite difficult. In most places in the country there is only a very slow or no internet at all. Besides this the way software as WordPress can be used is difficult (WordPress is the software for my blog). Anyhow I will try to send as much posts as possible. But it might happen that some of the images are scrambled or not shown at all. Another issue is the sending – it might happen you will receive the message for a new post several times. At one of the many ferrie jetties in Yangon you will find a fish market which is exporting all over the world. At this time of the year they catch tiger prawns in every size and weight. Everybody wear boots because the water on the floor can be several inches depending on which load of fish comes in. Except your photographer who got wet shoes and trousers.

Herewith some pictures with an overview of the Cuba exhibition at Résidence Groot Heideborgh Garderen (Netherlands). The name of the blow up (2,00m x 2,00m) is: Sunrise at the Malecon, Havana. The theme of the exhibition is Daily Life in Cuba – the Habaneros with their old American cars, their small apartments and the street life.

Our Holidays Greetings are brought as the intentions of the Shin-Pyu ceremony. May this help us in building our future in general and 2011 in particular.

This Shin-Pyu image shows the most important moment in the life of this young Burmese boy. Shin-Pyu is the initiation ceremony as a novice in the order of monks. He will stay from his 12th – 15th for approximately 5 years in the monastery. During these years he will be taught the normal school elements. But in principal the Buddhist way of life. This consists of the four noble truths: 1) life is suffering, 2) the cause of suffering is desire, 3) end suffering by giving up desire, 4) the way is the eightfold path. This is the so-called Middle Way consisting of 3 aspects of Buddhist practice. Wisdom (right understanding, right intention), ethical conduct /morality (right speech, right action, right livelihood)and mental discipline (right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration).

And they are happy and have a pleasant youth.

Exhibition at bookshop Polman/Bemmel

Fishers village Lintha at Thandwe Beach

A small village of 300 houses is living of getting and drying fish during the summer in sunlight. Everything is used for selling, personal consumption and animal food. At 06:00 AM the40 boats are coming back from a whole night at sea. The men bring the fish ashore and the women start preparing. During the day the women keep on preparing the fish of the former day so in the end it is completely dry. At 18:00 PM the men are going to sea again.

Chin Ladies around Mrauk-U

The older ladies of the Chin tribe are famous for their tattooed faces. The younger ones do not extend this habit because it is rather painful. Moreover the thanakha they put on their faces is for them much better and even nicer. So in the end these spectacular faces will disappear.

This time of the year the fisher men bring home mostly very young shrimps which are used for shrimps paste. The use of this paste is well known in Southern Eastern Asia. The way they sale their products is like an exchange by shouting.

On our way to the villages in the mountains we passed by a monastery with about only 20 novices. They were shy but soon became quite open and happy and kept on playing and laughing all the time.

Kyaing Tong – Ann Hill Tribe

The people of the Ann Hill Tribe are well known for their black teeth because of chewing specific leaves and some kind of tobacco. This group lives in a small village consisting of no more then 20 wooden houses. They are warm and friendly and invited us for lunch.

Have been for almost a day in this village of 20 houses. A larger part of the day it was raining but it was a joyful day for the children especially because of the visitors. The women are known for their pipe-smoking habit.

Mandalay – Mingun

Mingun has 3 important monuments. The largest working bell in the world which weighs 87 tons. The Mantara Gyi Pagoda sometimes described as the largest pile of bricks in the world. And finally the unusual white Hsinbyume Pagoda which architecture is founded in the Buddhist cosmology. Both pagodas were severly damaged by earthquakes in the past centuries.

Bagan – Chanting Festival in nunnery

At the end of the morning we arrived in the Zayta Wun nunnery in the Nyaung Oo village. They were celebrating the end of the 5 days Chanting festival. During these days you hear the sayings of Buddha 24 hours per day over the speaker system. Every nun is reciting by return for one hour. At the last day the family and relatives are preparing a rich meal. While I was photographing I was invited to join the table of the relatives after the nuns had their meal. In the sleeping room of one of the groups a large poster was hanging with the bulb fields of Keukenhof in the Netherlands.

Myanmar (2nd visit) – Bagan

The day before I arrived in Bagan there was a severe rainstorm. The soil could not absorb the water and it was flooding over the streets and around the lower pagoda’s. On the way to the hotel I passed by a collapsed 700 old years pagoda. The people of almost a whole village were helping to clean up the mess and to keep as much of the aged stones. There is a real concern about the other pagoda’s in case these rainstorms keep on passing by Bagan. This has never been seen in an area known as a rather dry.

2nd Visit Myanmar – Yangon

This is my first post from Myanmar. It took so long because of the slow internet conditions. Further on I did not inform you earlier because I was not sure if I could pass the immigration and customs. After all it was not an issue.

The first images are made in the market streets of Yangon. The evening images are made during the full moon festival while 9000 candles are burnt.

Herewith I want to show you how lonely and remote (almost desperate) most of the monasteries are built in the mountains. In some cases over the several (sometimes hundreds of) years the people start to build their own lodgings around a monastery. So it can end being a village but they keep their distant look.

Nepal – Discussing Monks

Every day, early in the evening from 18.00 – 20.00 the monks are practicing their discussion techniques. They try to defend a proposition or theorem for thirty minutes. To support his opinion the defender clap his hands with as much show and loudness as possible.

In the Druk Amitabha Mountain Nunnery I shot several portraits of the nuns. Several faces with several hats in several situations. In the future I will come back with some more also from Bhutan and Myanmar.

Nepal – Monks using musical instruments

In Nepal is het gebruikelijk dat door monniken instrumenten worden gebruikt om de gebeden te begeleiden. Gebeden zijn het uitspreken van spreuken van oude wijze mannen die afhankelijk van de fase waarin ze verkeren onder andere Buddha, Lama of Rinpuche worden genoemd.De begeleiding is geen vorm van muziek maar meer het aangeven van een ritme. Dit geheel van het uitspreken van spreuken met de geluidsbegeleiding kan wel 2 uren duren. Mij verveelde het niet maar het zitten op de grond (ook met een kussen) kon op den duur wel pijnlijk zijn. Deze foto’s zijn tijdens gebedceremonies in kloosters genomen en tijdens de oefeningen die iedere middag in de open lucht worden gehouden.

Nepal, Kung Fu at Druk Amitabha Mountain

Iedere morgen om 4 uur staan de jonge nonnen van Druk Amitabha Mountain klaar voor hun 2 uur durende Kung Fu oefeningen. En om 21.30 uur herhaalr zich dit proces. Hierbij leren ze niet allen zichzelf te verdedigen maar vooral om een goede geestelijke en lichamelijke gezondheid op te bouwen. Mede door deze oefeningen zijn ze onder ander in staat om tijdens de meditatie gedurende zes uur kaarsrecht op de grond te zitten met een volledige concentratie.

The nuns (novices) get up every day at 4 o’ clock in the morning to start practicing Kung Fu for 2 hours. And at nine thirty in the evening (9:30 PM) they do it again for 1 hour. They do this to gain a perfect mental and physical health.

De komende dagen zullen de afbeeldingen van Nepal op mijn blog verschijnen. Dit zal per thema gebeuren en niet chronologisch. De 2 eerste afbeeldingen zullen bij mensen die in de 70er jaren van de vorige eeuw hier ook waren de nodige herinneringen oproepen. De omgeving van deBoudha Stupa was de verzamelplaats van de hippies uit Europa en Amerika. Verder zijn er nog vele straten onverhard en met de nodige diepe kuilen. En het leven speelt zich nog steeds voor het grootste deel op straat af.

Bhutan day 13 Tiger’s Nest (Taksang Lhakhang)

De weg naar het Tiger’s Nest is meer dan 3 uur klimmen. Bovendien is het sinds een grote brand van een paar jaar geleden verboden tassen en dus ook camera’s mee naar binnen te nemen. We gaan toch naar boven omdat de ligging van dit klooster uniek is en in haar omgeving mooie plaatjes levert.

Oude mensen die deze beklimming een paar keer in de week doen.

Een novice met zijn spullen op weg naar het klooster waar hij een paar maanden zal blijven.

Bhutan day 12 Wang Sisina Lhakhang (nunnery)

In dit nonnenklooster kwamen we aan het einde van de ochtend. Dit betekent dat men direkt na de lessen aan de lunch begint. In tegenstelling tot het maaltijdregime in Myanmar is dit in Bhutan niet de laatste maaltijd van de dag. Wel is het ook hier sober; veel rijst wat groente en soep die als jus wordt gebruikt. De maaltijd moet snel naar binnen worden gewerkt want na een kwartier begint men de eetzaal al schoon te maken.

De les is afgelopen.

Snel de lunch naar binnen werken.

Ik begrijp niet waarom in een klooster het voedsel achter slot en grendel wordt bewaard.

Na de lunch wordt nog wat gepraat of gespeeld en daarna volgt de middagslaap.

Bhutan day 11 Monastery in Wangdi

Een paar minuten rijden buiten het plaatsje Wangdi ligt deze Dzong. Een Dzong is een gebouw waarin zich een klooster bevindt en de administratieve afdeling van de regio. Deze combinatie is zeer gewoon in Bhutan en heb ik in andere landen niet tot nauwelijks gezien. In het kloosterdeel bevinden zich voornamelijk jonge monnikken maar er zijn ook oudere die les geven. De novices blijven in principe hun hele leven in het klooster. Dit in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de novices in Myanmar die daar meestal een korte periode, tussen hun 15de en 20ste, in het klooster zijn.

Na de festivals gaan we terug naar de hoofdstad Thimphu met, vanwege de lengte, 2 overnachtingen. Niet zo zeer vanwege de lengte in afstand maar in tijd. Over de binnenlandse wegen bereik je een gemiddelde snelheid van hooguit 40 km per uur. Gedeeltes waar aardverschuivingen hebben plaats gevonden vragen uiteraard veel meer tijd. De monsoon is echter pas begonnen dus we zullen redelijk onze weg kunnen vervolgen.

Bhutan day 9 Kurjey Tshechu (Festival)

Op dag 7 hebben we de dansrepetitie van dit festival meegemaakt. Aan het dansen gaat nog een hele ceremonie vooraf die ik later nog eens zal laten zien.

Tussen de dansen door komt de verbeelding van Guru Rinpoche (de brenger van het Boeddhisme naar Bhutan) ten tonele. Alle, en dan ook alle mensen die zich op het terrein bevinden lopen langs hem om zijn zegen te ontvangen (in onze Westerse terminilogie).

De meeste festivals worden gekenmerkt door de maskers die worden gedragen. De dans is meestal een uitbeelding van de geschiedenis van het Boeddhisme (voornamelijk de invoering).

Dit was een bijzondere dag. We waren aanwezig bij een repetitie van de monnikken voor het jaarlijkse Kurjey Festival ter nagedachtenis van de geestelijke leider (Guru Rinpoche) die het Boeddhisme naar Bhutan bracht. Deze repetities zijn niet toegankelijk voor het publiek en ik denk dat ik één van de weinige fotografen die dit heeft vastgelegd. De titel van deze dag zou ook Dancing Monks kunnen zijn.

Bhutan day 7 (morning) Tang Lhakhang (nuns monastery – school)

Bij dit nonnenklooster kom je na een kleine twee uur rijden op een zowat onbegaanbare weg, onverhard en met vele kuilen en hier en daar wat aardverschuivingen. Het klooster is voor een groot deel door de nonnen zelf gebouwd. Het bijzondere was dat we binnenkwamen op het moment dat een aantal nonnen zich gereed maakten om geschoren te worden. Dit gebeurt zeer zelden in het bijzijn van bezoekers.

In dit klooster waren jonge kinderen opgenomen. Met een speelse blijheid werden de verschillende onderdelen van het Boeddhisme beleden en uitgevoerd.

Bhutan day 5 Start of the monsoon

Vanochtend in Wangdit stortregende het. De moesson (monsoon) begint rondom deze tijd. Het normale leven gaat echter gewoon door. De kinderen gaan naar school en de markt wordt zo goed en kwaad als het kan ingericht. Ook wij gaan dadelijk op stap langs waarschijlijk moeilijk begaanbare wegen naar een hooggelegen klooster.

Kinderen lopen het schoolterrein op.

Een marktvrouw probeert haar vaste stek van het water te ontdoen.

Bhutan day 4 Memorial Chorten (stupa)

Memorial Chorten (Chorten is Bhutaans voor Stupa) is in 1974 gebouwd ter nagedachtenis van één van de Bhutaans koningen en is de uitbeelding van het woord, het lichaam en de geest van Boeddha. Op het terrein bevindt zich ook een grote ruimte met een aantal grote gebedsmolens. Hier zijn een aantal foto’s gemaakt. In deze gebedsruimte bevinden zich de hele dag oudere en jongere mensen die er voor zorgen dat de gebedsmolens bijna continue draaien.

En dit is de feitelijke stupa gebouwd ter nagedachtenis van de 3de koning.

In Bhutan wordt veel aandacht besteed aan vaardigheden in de kunst. Er zijn vele scholen en de vaardigheden worden gedurende lange opleidingen met veel geduld door zeer ervaren handwerklieden bijgebracht.

In de middag bezoeken we een nonnenklooster alwaar we getuige zijn van een bijzondere gebedsbijeenkomst die gehouden wordt door een lokale persoon die kortgeleden een grote donatie heeft gedeponeerd.

Op weg naar de hoofdstad zijn er ook veel plaatjes te schieten. De weg is zeer goed omdat deze vanwege de kroning van de nieuwe koning pas verleden jaar is aangelegd. Dit zal in de loop van de reis naar het binnenland slechter worden.

Gebedsvlaggen op de berg voor het binnenrijden van Thimphu.

En dan zijn we tenslotte in de hoofdstad Thimphu, een plaats zonder verkeerslichten maar wel met nogal Engels uitziende verkeersagenten. Er is wel redelijk verkeer. Dit terwijl er pas eind jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw structureel begonnen werd met het aanleggen van wegen (dus pas een kleine 50 jaar geleden).

Bhutan day 1 Tshokor Ceremony (holy food collecting)

Gedurende een week wordt in het klooster door de dorpsbewoners voedsel verzameld. Gezien de warmte is het meestal verpakt voedsel (chips en dergelijke) met op de laatste dag een aanvulling met fruit. Na de ceremonie mogen de kloosterlingen het voedsel met de dorpsbewoners onder elkaar verdelen ( en dat gaat heel snel).

En ook voor de allerlaatste restanten zijn er liefhebbers.

De aanvliegroute op het enige vliegveld Paro in Bhutan is te vergelijken met die op het vroegere vliegveld van Hong Kong.

Na aankomst via de markt naar het klooster Kyichu om een “heilig voedsel vergaring” ceremonie mee te maken.

There is one possibility in Myanmar for a balloon flight. In Bagan you have to be at the departure area at 05.30 in the morning. After a breakfast you will have a wonderful flight over the hundreds of pagodas against the most beautiful sunrise. Because a lot of people asked for an impression I herewith post some images. The flight is until approximately 08.00. This is the only flight during the day but you can get in every day.

And on the afternoon of my last day I went to the train station.

Op de laatste middag breng ik een bezoek aan het oude station dat nog volop in gebruik is maar sinds de Engelse overheersing nauwelijks gerestaureerd. Vele beelden lijken op de meer bekende foto’s uit India. Misschien lukt het me nog een keer een lange treinreis door Myanmar te maken.

Myanmar day 14 Yangon another monastery visit

During one of my last days in Yangon I went again to a novices monastery and covered a part of their daily life. And again this was a day of joy frankness and sincerity. The colours, the light inside and the faces were fantastic.

Dit zijn beelden van één van de laatste dagen van mijn bezoek aan Myanmar. Ik ga op zoek naar een klooster waar het gewone leven nog steeds plaats vindt met zijn oude gebruiken en gewoontes. Eén van de dagactiviteiten is het gewone onderwijs (waaronder Engels). Ook hier mag ik gewoon door de klas heen lopen om mijn foto’s te maken.

Myanmar day 11-13 Bagan

Bagan the place of 3000 pagoda’s. In a small wooden pagoda I shot these images of novices. The light was beautiful and the space was exactly what I needed.

In dit bericht vanuit Myanmar laat ik , volgens mij, de beste serie zien. Het is geschoten in een houten pagode waar het behoorlijk donker was. Er waren een aantal novices aanwezig die zonder aarzelingen of door bleven spelen en mediteren of op mijn verzoek zich verplaatsten. Voor de kenners vermeld ik nog dat vele beelden vanwege het weinige licht geschoten zijn met een snelheid van 3200 iso. Het licht was voor mij fantastisch en deed denken aan het Rembrandlicht in Nederland.

Myanmar day 8-10 Inle Lake

We spent a couple of days at the Inle Lake. A wonderfull place to be because all the traffic is over water (so no cars or bicycles). And the people have a unique way to use the paddle by one foot.

Op het onderdeel dag 8-10 geef ik een samenvatting van het bezoek aan Inle lake. Dit meer lijkt op een veredelde versie van Water World (film van Kevin Kostner). Het enige wat niet drijft zijn de huizen die op palen zijn gebouwd. Verder drijft de rest dus ook de tuinen waarop van alles wordt gekweekt. De drijvende tuinen worden met boten onderhouden en deze boten zijn ook het algemene vervoersmiddel Lopen kun je in je eigen huis en af en toe via een brug naar de buren. Verder kan je met een fiets of wat dan ook niet terecht. Op dit meer leven de mensen van de Da Nu stam. Er zijn dagelijkse markten die per dag in een ander deel van het meer worden gehouden. In de foto’s breng ik vooral het specifieke van de vissers in beeld: het roeien door met één been de roeispaan te gebruiken en de speciale viskorf.

Myanmar day 7 Mandalay marble workshops

During the last day in mandalay we stayed a couple of hours around the marble workshops and nearby was a wonderfull monastery.

Dit is de laatste dag in Mandalay. De bewerking van de marmeren beelden langs de straat met al het verkeer en de rondlopende nonnen en monniken is kenmerkend voor dit gebied. Verder zijn er ook nog veel kloosters en pagoda’s.

Novices in an old pagoda that is what you see over here. A joyfull morning somewhere outside Mandalay.

Op de tweede dag in Mandalay had ik het bijzondere geluk een aantal novices (jonge kloosterlingen) in een vervallen pagode vast te leggen. Verder waren er ook een aantal jongere kinderen in deze ruïne aan het spelen.

Around Mandalay you will find a lot of small villages. Although the people do not see so many tourists they are overwhelming warm and friendly to strangers.

In deze serie komen de mensen van de dorpen rondom Mandalay in beeld. Hoewel ze nauwelijks toeristen zien zijn ze niet afstandelijk noch opdringerig. De openheid (bijna naïviteit) is hartverwarmend en als je niet te luidruchtig en te dwingend bent (zoals we dat kennen van verschillende westerlingen) komt aan hun vriendelijkheid geen eind.

After a couple of days without any possibility for communication now back on internet. You will see some pictures of what I shot in the last days. I will try to come back to each item with more images in the next couple of days.

Na vele dagen verstoken te zijn van kranten, mobiele telefoons en internetverbindingen nu eindelijk weer in de bewoonde wereld. Het was trouwens niet onaangenaam om op deze wijze te werken.

Er volgt een samenvatting van de afgelopen week. In de komende dagen zal ik proberen de verschillende onderwerpen apart te belichten.

Hierbij een korte toelichting op de beelden:

- de foto van de visser is gemaakt op Inle Lake; kenmerkend is dat ze met één been tegen de roeispaan roeien; de voorbeelden komen er aan,

- de vrouw met de ringen om haar nek behoort tot de stam Padaung die woont in een gebied dat niet toegankelijk is voor toeristen; de lange nek krijgen ze door het in de loop der tijd geleidelijk meer ringen toe te voegen; de ringen zijn behoorlijk zwaar en het verbaast me dat ze niet omvallen als ze een verkeerde beweging maken,

- het jongetje wiens hoofdhaar wordt geschoren heeft net een zeer utgebreide processie meegemaakt waarna ze als novice aan het klooster worden overgedragen; ze verblijven er voor enkele weken om rond hun 20ste voor ongeveer 5 jaar terug te komen,

- de monnik die zijn eetgerei aan het afwassen is heeft net zijn lunch gehad (om 11.30) om daarna een uur te slapen, dan volgen de lessen en aan het eind van de dag gaan ze weer het dorp in om bij de dorpsbewoners eten voor de volgende ochtend op te halen,

- tenslotte heb ik in Bagan, de plaats en omgeving van ongeveer 3000 pagoda’s, een ballontocht gemaakt en omdat er ook een tweede ballon meeging heb ik in feite een serie gemaaakt van een ballon waarin ik zelf zat.

These are the images of a monastery in Yangon. The novices do not have any objection being photographed. They even support you in showing you around in their living areas. Their sincerity and friendliness really comes out of their hearts – unique in this world.

Deze dag is de eerste dag dat ik een boedhistisch klooster kan bezoeken. Ik heb een goede gids die volledig op de hoogte is van alle gebruiken en gewoontes. Dit klooster is één van de weinige die zowel een vrouwen- als een mannenafdeling hebben. De meesten zijn heel jong en ze willen mij alles laten zien en ze laten zich zonder probleen fotograferen (tenzij ze te verlegen zijn). Voor degene die wat van fotograferen afweten: deze foto’s zijn niet met een telelens gemaakt maar met de midden zoomlens 24-70 mm.

Myanmar day 3 Yangon Shwedagon pagoda

The Shwedagon pagoda is the largest one in Myanmar. It is visited by the Burmese people whenever it is possible.

De tijd gaat snel en de dagen zijn zeer vermoeiend. Ik sta meestal om 5 uur op om ook het goede ochtendlicht mee te nemen en lig pas tussen 11.00 en 12.00 in bed. Dit omdat ik na het laatste zonlicht en het gebruikelijke verkwikkende bad en diner direkt aan het downloaden van de bestanden begin. Daarna moeten alle apparaten worden geladen en de bestanden van de dag voor een presentatie worden bijgewerkt.

Shwedagon pagode was het eerste kontakt met de geestelijken van het land. Ook deze mensen staan zonder problemen stil om op de foto te worden vastgelegd.

Myanmar day 2 Golden Rock (Kyaik-Tiyo)

This day I went to the Kyaik-Tiyo pagoda. An exciting and heavy trip which took 17 hours. It looks like the Golden Rock will fall down every moment but as long as they put enough gold paper this might never happen. And by the way there is one piece of Budha’s hair what will make this will never happen.

Vandaag ben ik om 04:00 uur ’s ochtends vertrokken naar de plaats Kyaikto en daar staat de Kyaik-Tiyo pagode ook bekend als de Golden Rock. Deze rots lijkt op wankele basis bovenop een grotere rots te staan maar zolang men er maar voldoende goudpapier op plakken zal dat wel niet gebeuren.

Na het bereiken van de plaats met een taxi moeten ik met een kleine truck (zie foto) 6 km de berg op waar hij een half uur over doet. Er is echter één probleem en dat is dat de verordening aangeeft dat de kleine truck pas vertrekt als er 51 mensen in zitten. Veel meegemaakt maar dit was wel een ervaring.

Daarna moest er nog 4 km gelopen worden en dat was zo stijl dat ik na elke 200 m even moest rusten. Wel daarna mooie foto’s geschoten. Hopelijk de komende dagen wat minder inspannend.

Myanmar day 1 Yangon the people

This is the first day in Yangon. With these pictures I only want to give an impression of the warm and frienly people of Myanmar. And the Swedagon pagoda is the most wellknown pagoda of Yangon and Myanmar.

Dit zijn een aantal foto’s van de eerste dag. De mensen zijn vriendelijk en laten zich makkelijk fotograferen. Het is één van de weinige plekken in de wereld waar zelfs het ongevraagd vastleggen wordt toegestaan, neen zelfs nog wordt gestimuleerd. De avondopname is van de Shwedagon pagode, de grootste en de rijkste pagode van Myanmar. Verder een aantal foto’s waarmee ik een eerste indruk van Yangon wil geven.
